Top DJs Compete for the Gold at Rouge at MGM Grand Las Vegas

America’s Best DJ will be named Tuesday, Sept. 2, along with silver, bronze finalists.

LAS VEGAS- The country’s top DJs will be announced Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the third annual America’s Best DJ finals taking place at Rouge at MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

The invite-only reception and presentation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m., followed by an open-to-the-public celebration from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., featuring some of the top-ranking America’s Best DJ finalists spinning live. Among those confirmed to appear are one of the legendary trailblazers of turntablism, DJ Qbert; Thrive recording artist and MTV star DJ Skribble; West Coast trance star Christopher Lawrence; and DJ Scotty Boy, voted Vegas’ Best Local Resident DJ in 2005.

Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded to the finalists from a field of 100 DJs from across the country, with winners being decided from fans’ ballots. The list of competitors is Olympic in scope and
includes some of the top names in the dance-music industry, including DJ AM, Crystal Method, Tommy Lee and DJ Aero, and Moby.

Sponsored by Pioneer Pro DJ and presented by DJ Times, ClubPlanet.com and the International DJ Expo, dance and club music enthusiasts have been voting since May 1 online at www.americasbestdj.net and in person at 40 events held throughout the nation.

Along with the medal, the winner will receive top-of-the-line DJ packages from Pioneer, and the bragging rights that go along with being named America’s Best DJ.

Lee Coombs has been at the forefront of the electronic music scene for the better part of 15 years. He’s released groundbreaking mix CDs, remixed the world’s most acclaimed artists and knocked out dancefloor destroying productions considered classics years after their release. While often associated with the Breaks genre, this labelling does not begin to tell the entire story. A boundary-less approach is truly Coombs’ trademark and he’s famous for mixing up breaks, house, electro, techno and acid with dexterous assurance. Prime example: Lot49 Presents: Lee Coombs

For this compilation, Coombs has pulled out all the stops, digging deep into a treasure trove of breaks, house and techno and pulling out pure gold. Opening with the rocking drums and simple catchy riff of Coombs & DJ Icey’s “Duo Drive The Ride,” the mix shifts effortlessly through an electronic landscape taking in earth shuddering basslines, deep brooding grooves and a blatant disregard to genre boundaries. Here. Offerings from Tiga’s Turbo label sit alongside productions from German wunderkind Oliver Huntemann and rough breaks and bass from Dopamine rub shoulders with the house sound of Guy Gerber. Amongst the gems is an unreleased Meat Katie remix of Alloy Mental and the much sought after “No Hits” from Black Mountain vs UNKLE.

Lot49 Presents: Lee Coombs is just one of several new releases this Producer/Remixer/DJ has planned for the next few months. In October top breaks label Fingerlickin’ Records will release Coombs’ “The Future Sound of Retro 2008 remixes” and include the track on it’s 10-year anniversary compilation. In November, Lot49 Records will issue Lee Coombs feat Katherine Ellis “Control.” The package is set to feature three remixes and will be available in both vinyl and digital formats. Looking towards 2009, Coombs looks to offer his collaboration with Uberzone entitled “Right Now” and plans on the release of his latest original artist CD. While still dancefloor focused, Coombs views this album as his most ambitious project yet. It will feature a range of tempo from 100 – 128 bpm and collaborations with the likes of Meat Katie, Seasunz, Katherine Ellis, Uberzone, among others.

* In 1998 Coombs made his first massive strike on the breaks scene as the prized recruit of then ‘up and coming’ label Finger Lickin’, with the man’s acclaimed album of 2001 ‘Future Sound of Retro’ signalling his arrival on the world stage. Such was the impressive nature of Coombs’ debut that respected industry figurehead Pete Tong noted him as the ‘man to watch’. Kitsune Maison record label and fashion trendsetters are leading the revolution with an army of musical insurgents set to storm Ete d’Amour at Santos Party House on Thursday, September 4th. Together with Fischerspooner, Guns N Bombs, Gildas & Masaya and Heartsrevolution Live, Kitsune is armed and set to invade and conquer with their electronic-pop dance music aesthetic.

Avant-garde indie darlings Fischerspooner are back on the scene with work on their third full-length album with producer Jeff Saltzman (The Killers, The Black Keys, The Sounds). Earlier this year, French label Kitsune released two of these songs, “The Best Revenge” and “Danse En France” and tonight, their fearless and flamboyant leader Casey Spooner is joined by the talented director Jon Kane, ready to take command of the party with a special DJ set. Also, LA-based dance duo Guns ‘n’ Bombs join the assault with their ambitious style of robotic electronica, along with Kitsuné Music’s founders Gildas & Masaya and NYC’s own Heartsrevolution performing an explosive live set.

The one and only Respect party is back in New York with its club festival ÉTÉ D’AMOUR, to celebrate the summer! PAXAHAU CELEBRATES TEN YEARS OF PREMIERE ELECTRONIC MUSIC EVENTS WITH THREE NIGHTS OF MUSIC AND A NEW WEBSITE

Paxahau, a Detroit music and event promotions group, electrifies the
city with three days of music and a new website to celebrate their ten
year anniversary. The event kicks off at Exodus on Thursday night,
August 28th, 2008 and continues on Saturday night at Oslo, Sunday day
at Z’s Villa and Sunday night at Northern Lights Lounge, all located
in Detroit.

“This project has been an incredible adventure over the past 10 years
and has accomplished a lot here in Detroit,” said founder Jason

On August 26, Pioneering west coast electronic music act Mephisto Odyssey (AKA Mikael Johnston and Josh Camacho) makes a heralded return to the international dance floor with it’s aptly titled smash-in-waiting “Bump.” This 4-track electro/breaks/Hip-Hop hybrid was produced in conjunction with Hieroglyphics member DJ Toure and features vocals from DJ Polywog (from the movie Groove) and Z-man from LA-based Hip-Hop act One Block Radius.

On the remix front, two of Boston’s most promising underground acts – Fantastadon and Hot Pink DeLorean – blow the roof off the house with their own unique interpretations on the track. Hell, we are all so confident that you are gonna love “Bump” that Mephisto Odyssey allowed us to give away Hot Pink Delorean’s remix FREE. When not playing with acts like L.A. Riots, Hot Pink Delorean has made some waves in the underground by remixing Britney Spears “Radar,” The Qemists Featuring Mike Patton “Lost Weekend,” M.I.A. “Boyz,” The Glass “Mad At You” and Cassette Jam “Don’t Lose Control.” Wait until you hear how filthy they get with this one!

Formed in San Francisco circa 1993, Mephisto Odyssey would in short time become one America’s most influential electronic music acts. Championing the “west coast sound” Mephisto Odyssey’s seminal 1994 single “Dream of the Black Dahlia” (featuring remixes by Freaky Chakra & Dubtribe) sold over 5,000 12” vinyl copies and lead to it’s signing with City Of Angles records; original home to cutting edge American breakbeat artists including The Crystal Method and Uberzone.

Emerging before the late-90’s global dance music explosion, Mephisto Odyssey was also known for being one of the first artists in the genre to present a proper live show. The band went on the road in support of it’s debut full-length City Of Angels album Catching the Skinny and performed electronically sequenced music with live keyboards, guitar, vocalists and DJing. Major labels started to take notice. After the overwhelming success generated from Mephisto Odyssey’s remix of Janes Addiction’s “So What,” Warner Brothers records signed the act to a recording contract and it produced the act’s major label debut, 2000’s “Deep Red Connection.” Mephisto Odyssey wasn’t just the first electronic dance act to be signed to Warner Bros. US, but the deal would soon expand to include a distribution deal for Mephisto Odyssey’s label “Primal Breakz” through ADA. Essentially, Mephisto Odyssey was granted permission to release their 12” singles independently using WB resources. This kind of deal is unprecedented in the history of the label.

Over it’s 15-year career, Mephisto Odyssey has worked with a who’s who of the electronic music industry while also selling 12” records numbering in the tens of thousands. This staying power is due in large part to the working relationship between Mikael Jonhnston and Josh Camacho. In addition to his role with Mephisto Odyssey, Mikael Johnston has engineered/produced/remixed music for artists including Static X, I am the World Trade Center and The Sounds. Producer/remixer/DJ Josh Camacho brings the current vibe of the dance floor to Mephisto Odyssey’s music. In addition to his production work, Camacho is an accomplished DJ who has performed at some of the world’s finest venues.

Mephisto Odyssey is now hard at work on their follow-up single to “Bump.” The yet to be titled track will once again be produced in conjunction with DJ Touré and will feature Del from Hieroglyphics & The Gorillaz. Additionally, Mephisto Odyssey’s Mikael Johnston will soon be teaming up with Dave Dresden (Gabriel & Dresden) and Dave Penner (Andain) on an unnamed side project. Keep your ears open!

John Graham is revered in clubbing circles for nearly two-decades worth of smash productions, remixes and DJ sets. The man is unpredictable and uses guises including Space Manouvers, Stoneproof, Skanna, Tilt and Quivver to release tracks depending on the style. Graham’s just released debut Quivver artist album Dirty Nails And Vapour Trails went all over the electronic map, ranging in styles from Progressive house to drum n’ bass. However, there’s more to John Graham than just club music. He’s also a huge movie buff and is already making a huge splash in tinseltown.

Those who have seen “The Dark Knight” may recall seeing a trailer for “Sin City” director Frank Miller’s new project “The Spirit.” The trailer is set to the epic track “Choke” from Welsh breakbeat duo Hybrid. The haunting vocals running throughout are provided by John Graham.

John Graham is also working with famed composer Harry Gregson-Williams (“Shrek,” “The Chronicles Of Narnia,” “Gone Baby Gone” and the forthcoming “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) on the score for Tony Scott’s remake of “The Taking Of Pelham One Two Three” (now titled “The Taking Of Pelham 123.”) The original 1974 NYC subway hijack thriller features a cast including Walter Mathau, Martin Balsam, Jerry Stiller, Hector Elizondo. The 2009 version features an ensemble cast including Denzel Washington, John Travolta, John Turturro and James Gandolfini.

Now that Quivver’s debut artist CD Dirty Nails And Vapour Trails is in stores, we wanted to offer you a taste of what’s been buzzing around the world.
