Cielo : October 2008 News

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The temperatures might be starting to dip outside on the streets of Manhattan, but inside Cielo October is another month to raise the thermostat, ignite the passion and marvel at the wealth of international talent lined up to entertain, educate and enthrall.

The calm before the storm arrives in the youthful and soulful shape of The Martinez Brothers. The siblings from the Bronx made a lasting impression when they played Cielo in April, and return as Dance.Here.Now guests on October 2nd. Discovered by Dennis Ferrer, teenage phenoms Chris & Steve made their recording debut last year on his Objektivity label, and haven’t looked back since. But remember: if you’re gonna buy them a drink make sure it’s a soda!

Currently putting the finishing touches to a new Way Out West album for release in the new year, Made Event presents Nick Warren on Friday 3rd as part of his Global Underground world tour. Warren’s one of the leading lights in the UK prog-scene flying the flag alongside contemporaries Sasha, Digweed and Seaman. Selecting the Peruvian capital Lima for his latest release in the legendary GU city series, Warren compiles an entirely exclusive track list to capture the sound and ambience of this historic former Incan city. Based around the Global Underground event captured in the album’s beautiful stylized artwork, the ‘GU35 Lima’ mix is a sonic missile – simple, direct, and deadly.

Things heat up on Sunday 5th as Robbi Presents Two Nations featuring Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzales and Wayne Williams. Gonzalez, one half of the legendary Masters At Work production team, needs little by way of introduction. With partner and our Roots resident Louie Vega, their unique combination of hip-house-jazz style have made them originators in a sound that has been often imitated yet rarely successfully duplicated. Together they’ve remixed a veritable who’s who, while as producers in their own right, have crafted some of the most ground-breaking singles in dance music history (‘The Nervous Track’, ‘It’s Alright, I Feel It’ and ‘You Can Do It). Partnered on the night with fellow New Yorker Wayne Williams, the man nicknamed the Ambassador Of House, has another impressive title to his name: Senior VP of A&R at Jive Records. Since the ‘90s Williams has co-produced groundbreaking singles for Mr Lee, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, R. Kelly and even Justin Timberlake.

Synonymous with the techno sound of Sweden, on Thursday 9th, Made Event presents the Drumcode Tour featuring techno giant Adam Beyer and special guest Joel Mull. Drumcode, the Stockholm-based label managed by Beyer, arrives at Cielo fresh from dates in Japan, Korea, Ibiza, Madrid, Amsterdam and Toronto – underscoring the true global presence of the label and producer. One of the new breed of electronica dons, Beyer is the epitome of cosmopolitan cool and a disciple of incessant tech-house and burbling progressive beats. Joel Mull started traveling around the globe more than a decade ago and quickly made himself well known as the “Swedish Techno Soul” of the electronic world. Both Mull and Beyer are long time friends, colleagues, and collaborators and Mull has had a residency spot on the “Drumcode” label parties that Adam has been taking on the road over the past six years

Keeping with the European theme the following night, Friday 10th, Luca Bacchetti, one of Italy’s leading tech-house DJs, graces the decks for Basic NYC. In recent months Bacchetti has remixed Danny Tenaglia’s ‘Dance Space’ and tracks for a handful of cutting edge labels including Dubfire’s burgeoning Sci+Tec imprint, SAW, Viva and Tenax. While his incendiary DJ sets can be heard at destinations as far and wide as Florence, Berlin and Tokyo with fans numbering Richie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Steve Lawler and Satoshi Tomiie. Bacchetti’s stature recognized earlier this year when he was nominated for a Beatport Music Award in the Best Minimal Artist category.

And talking of Dubfire and his burgeoning Sci+Tec, the Deep Dish man headlines Cielo on Tuesday 14th. The Grammy Award winner has always been at the cutting edge of dance, be it blending twisted beats, rocky guitar riffs or percolating synth-driven basslines. The uncompromising producer has been setting trends since the mid-‘90s, while his DJ sets equally fuse their trademark crystalline electronica sound with oddball percussion to plough an eccentric furrow with considerable style.

Contender for highlight of the month is Dance.Here.Now presenting the Swedish House Mafia on Thursday, 16th. Featuring two of the biggest DJ and most in demand producers on circuit, Steve Angello & Sebastian Ingrosso. The duo and childhood friends from Stockholm have been collaborating for many years under a variety of guises, but it’s as remixers that the pair has delivered some of the biggest and best loved club makeovers in recent years. This translating into their DJ sets that are generally regarded as a sonic master class fuelled by high-octane grooves, electro-etched beats, and angst twisted basslines and punked up funky hooks. A night not to be missed with advance tickets available from Danceherenowny.com

Another essential date for the diary comes on Saturday 18th when the White Island sound comes to Manhattan Island for El Cielo Ibiza Vs. Cielo NYC. Cielo residents Nicolas Matar and Willie Graff need little by way of introduction, with Graff making his annual pilgrimage to Ibiza for his summer residency at Pacha. Ibiza favorite son, DJ Pippi, joins them on what’s set to be a magical night of soulful house, Latin-infused grooves, Mediterranean beats and spiritual messages. Celebrating his 25th year on the island, Pippi is generally regarded as the DJ’s DJ and often mentioned in dispatches alongside such legendary figures as Larry Levan, and Frankie Knuckles. If you enjoy the night you own a slice by picking up a copy Cielo’s latest compilation ‘Cinco’. Out now on Tommy Boy Records and mixed by Nicolas and Willie, Update magazine called it: “a sleek, sexy, soul-soothing collection… in a time where we’re increasingly being told to find new ways to let off stream from the riggers of city living, this comes as the ideal tonic.”

Roger Sanchez is as busy clocking up the international DJ air miles as he’s ever been. Any given week you’ll find him spinning in Tokyo, Ibiza, Sydney, London, or on Tuesday 21st, in New York as headliner of Secret Soul Sessions. In between running his Stealth label, releasing material as a chart-topping artist, and picking up Grammy Awards for his remixes, the former B-Boy from Queens does what he does best behind the decks. Come and hear for yourself why the S-Man has consistently been voted one top DJs in the world for over a decade.

Cielo Presents an essential double-header on Thursday 23rd as Berlin-based electro giants M.A.N.D.Y. go head-to-head with London’s eclectic pioneer, James Lavelle. Patrick Bodmer & Philipp Jung from the German group are also co-founders of Get Physical label and were responsible for the 2005 club smash “Body Language”, voted ‘Ibiza Track of the Season’. Their particular blend of electro is chewier and more fun then most, employing tuneful and obscure reference points alongside unadulterated oddball crystalline electronica, helping propel them to an echelon all of their own. It’s also impossible to do James Lavelle’s resume justice in just a few lines. The mastermind behind the eclectically diverse Mo’ Wax label, he also produced a plethora of acclaimed artists covering trip-hop, breakbeat and house genres working with everyone from Massive Attack and UNKLE to Richard Ashcroft and Thom Yorke. Today he scores movie soundtracks, holds a residency at Fabric in London, and if you come along and hear for yourself, will blow your mind with his diverse and highly entertaining DJ sets.

Israeli DJ, producer, label manager, Shlomi Aber delivers his unique blend of tech-etched house to Cielo on Friday, 24th. In a little over two years the Tel Aviv-based owner of Be As One Records has made an impact almost second-to-none. The reason is simple: his genre-defying creations and appreciation has seen his fan base swell to the sort of status usually reserved for superstar DJs with supporters numbering Carl Craig, Pete Tong, John Digweed, and Francois K. Aber’s intoxicating rush of synthesized electronica and taut minimal techno combine to create melancholic soundscapes of deep pads in juxtapose to the hypnotic grooves. Little wonder DJ mag said: “Shlomi’s sets are full with warm and unique sounds that makes you feel like you are going back to the better days of music… you can just feel the magic in the air.”

Gui Boratto
, the thirty-something producer, musician and composer from São Paulo, Brazil, graces the decks on Tuesday, 28th for Basic NYC. Boratto has been described as “a sleight-of-speed master”, in the way he calls on big, trancey sounds and sets up enough space between them to let elision create arrangements on their own terms. His debut artist album, ‘Chromophobia’, a testimony to his testosterone fuelled techno sound that could best be described as a seat-of-your-pants ride down a German autobahn in a convertible during a lightening strike. His DJ sets are equally full of raw emotion, energy, pumped up beats and hooks that grab you onto the dancefloor all night long.

New Label Balearic Masters Release First Single ‘Amnesia Terrace’

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Jordi Villalta
Amnesia Terrace
Original Mix / Legaz & Spider AKA Majorkings Remix

Label: Balearic Masters

Welcome to Balearic Masters, a fresh new label bringing you the best sounds from the current cream of the crop of Balearic-based DJ’s & Producers.

Kicking off this first release is Amnesia resident Jordi Villalta with the aptly titled Amnesia Terrace. Villalta has lived in Ibiza for nearly 15 years with his musical career starting at local radio station Cadena Cien Ibiza that then led to some big positions at various stations on the white isle. Looking after the dance music policies and interviewing some of the major hitters of the dance scene such as Carl Cox, MANDY, Tiësto and Roger Sanchez, Jordi is renowned for his DJing as much as his radio presence. Playing at some of the biggest clubs in Ibiza including DC10, Space and Privilege, Jordi is currently resident at Amnesia’s longest running weekly night, People from Ibiza.

The Original Mix is a Tech House monster, think swing beats, swirly arpeggios, a hard as nails kick drum and bassline that bounces everything along towards some pretty massive build ups, the sort of record that will tear the roof off the Amnesia Terrace. Judging by the YouTube videos, Jordi has certainly road tested this tune to full affect. Also accompanied by Majorca residents Legaz & Spider AKA Majorkings on remix duties, expect this EP to make a firm dent in the Balearic’s thriving scene plus the rest of Europe and beyond.

With the next EP planned very soon, keep your eyes and ears peeled for further announcements from Balearic Masters!

Musically there are way too many prominent names on this spectacular night to sum up; however, here are some highlights:

German labels Connaisseur and Hello?Repeat will present the vanguard from their artists’ shed like Estroe, Afrilounge & Mark August amongst others. Two of Holland’s biggest live-talents ‘Olene Kadar’ and Sandrien will do exclusive showcases of their new material. Exclusive early morning sets will be rocked by Bart Skils and Ille Bitch and Jan Krueger and Daze Maxim, Berlin’s uncrowned kings of the eclectic side of minimal-techno will provide intense and highly anticipated Dj-sets — do NOT miss them!

So, time to drop a record-breaking number of national and international artists on one location, and see them perform within a timetable in which opening hours are stretched to the limit!

In a nutshell:

Catz ‘n Dogz debut album “Stars of Zoo” out this fall on mothership

A hybrid masterpiece that crosses the line between the best elements of deep house, minimal techno and cinematically arranged live instrumentation

Release date: October 28, 2008

www.myspace.com/3channels

The name is new, but chances are you’ve already heard Catz ‘n Dogz. Previously, as “3 Channels,” the best friend duo have already released red-hot club records on some of the most respected underground dance labels in the world including Trapez, Crosstown Rebels, Pokerflat, Boxer, dirtybird, Leena, Trenton, and their own imprint, Channels Recordings. After making underground techno for many years, the duo have now ventured into new territory. This time, as Catz n’ Dogz, the boys have headed towards deep house without losing sight of their harder techno roots – exploring lush organic soundscapes with live drums and instrumentation.

Their full Polish names are Grzegorz and Wojchiech but you can call them Greg and Voitek or Catz n’ Dogz. Back in 2003 they started it all off by organizing a club night in their home town of Szczecin, Poland. This night soon became a residency and their reputation grew quickly.  A radio show soon followed on Szczecin’s ABC Radio allowing them to explore their creativity and gain a legion of fans. Soon after that, they began to produce records together as 3 Channels. And now they come to us with their next level evolution, their amazing first full length album as Catz n’ Dogz, called Stars of Zoo. The Catz explain the reason for their name change: “3 Channels music was just oscillating around 4/4 techno, minimal and electrohouse. In the past few years, our music grown has grown up a little bit. We started to use more instruments and vocals. Catz ‘n Dogz music is deeper and we work a lot harder to make the fundamental groove.”

The instant Claude VonStroke heard the new sound he snatched it up for his mothership label. Greg and Voitek had already generated two smash hit appearances on Claude’s dirtybird label, remixing the infamous “Who’s Afraid of Detroit?” on limited one-sided vinyl which has been seen selling for up to 100 euros a copy on the web! They also destroyed dance-floors with last years hit “Chicken Affair EP,” crossing over to DJs as diverse as Radioslave, Jesse Rose, and Sebo K.

And now for the reason we care about all this, the music. The full length Stars of Zoo is a hybrid masterpiece; a beautiful cross between the best elements of deep house, minimal techno, and cinematically arranged live instrumentation. This is an album of songs – not tracks! “It’s a combination of many styles,” they explain of the album. “From deep house to techno via traditional house – every track tells a different story, but there are a lot of things in common. That’s why we called it ‘Stars of Zoo’. The tracks are very unpredictable, and every time you can hear something more and more wild, but still the groove is very basic.”

Early reactions from dancefloors all over the world have been universally positive – a testament to the power of this music. Supporting the album is a group of heavy hitting remixers – the Italoboyz, Voodeux, Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts, and Guido Schneider. All have supplied their unique takes on the source material, resulting in a formidable collection of music.

“South Central will have us raving all year long!” – Dazed and Confused

“…when it goes all old-skool electro it’s rather pleasant – but the overall effect is like being forced screaming into the ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ video and being told you can’t leave until your ears bleed. And believe us, they will.” – NME

“This has balls. It’s punk but it’s electro, it hurts your ears but it’s melodic, it’s…it’s…the future I guess, and I like it. This shows a few electro cross-over bands that are out there on our Artrocker radar how it’s really done.” – Artrocker

******

BRIGHTON, UK – . If you’ve been active in the international music blogging community or read top UK music publications there’s a good chance you are already aware of the noise South Central has been making. It seems from their inception South Central have always inhabited the hostile worlds of indie and dance simultaneously, unlike the multitudes of cross-over bands who have to find their feet in one genre and only later mutate to include both Now it’s time to sick The Owl of Minerva on ya.

The Owl of Minerva is a collection of South Central’s finest work of the last two years; music that’s never been available on CD or mp3. This collection not only acts as a must-have for fans and DJs, but also bringing the South Central story right up to the present and paving the way for the South Central debut album in 2009. Taking its title from nineteenth century philosopher Hegel’s assertion that “any historical condition can only be understood just as it passes away,” it is perhaps no coincidence then that this release also heralds the historic formation of South Central’s own imprint, Egregore Music.

Shrouded in mystery (and indeed their trademark black hoods) the enigma that is South Central manifests itself as both a 2-man DJ/Production duo and as a 5-piece live band; the former spectacularly dissolves the boundaries of what DJing and live music are. The latter is the cowled synthesis of guitars and technology that combines the spirit and song of indie rock with the pounding electronics of big-room techno. But there’s also an unpredictable side to the live show. The band does a killer rendition of Josh Wink’s Higher State Of Consciousness” (available on the CD) and recently performed a live cover of Daft Punk’sDa Funk” in Paris of all places! The live show is so good that Does It Offend You, Yeah? tapped South Central as the main support act  for it’s October UK tour. No surprise then that both the indie kids and the danceheads have signed up for more.

To date, South Central has remixed artists including Klaxons, Van She, The Whip, Metronomy, Shy Child, Maccabees and Shitdisco, among many others. South Central’s bootleg of Klaxon’s “The Bouncer” was such an underground success that even UK radio stalwarts XFM’s John Kennedy and Radio 1’s Pete Tong picked up on it. And for your viewing pleasure we offer a link into South Central’s $36 dollar budget video for it’s debut single “Nothing Can Go Wrong” (click here to watch), which received constant rotation from MTV UK, in addition to traditional support from Annie Mac and Steve Lamacq on Radio 1.

The Owl Of Minerva is released December 9 on Egregore Music.

On October 14, Japanese dance rock pioneers Boom Boom Satellites (aka bassist/programmer Masayuki Nakano and guitarist/vocalist Michiyuki Kawashima) celebrates their 10-year anniversary with the digital release of Exposed.” Boom Boom Satellites are widely considered one of the first true “dance rock” band’s (the genre didn’t even exist back then) and their impact is felt in the music of some of today’s most popular artists. “Exposed” offers 12 tracks that blends philosophical lyrics and an untamed physical rave experience with the toughness of rock’n’roll and the precision of electronic programming.

Boom Boom Satellites first gained notoriety during the late-90’s electronica explosion for making music that sounded unlike what anyone else was doing in the world. The band’s melding of dance and rock music was in your face, unique and 100% live. And this live show is at the crux of what makes Boom Boom Satellites stand out from the crowd. In fact, the live show is so good that Boom Boom Satellites have been a favorite at top festivals around the world and toured with acts including Underworld and Moby, among many others.

Including Exposed, Boom Boom Satellites have released six studio albums – Out Loud (1998), Umbra (2001), Photon (2002), Full Of Elevating Pleasures (2005) and On (2006). Critical acclaim for Out Loud lead to many opportunities from the onset including global tours and remix requests from artists including Garbage, Josh Wink and Jaydee and Ken Ishii. Boom Boom Satellites are also a favorite act of Hollywood filmmakers having famously worked on the music to the soundtrack of main scene from Luc Besson’s Yamakashi. In 2004, Boom Boom Satellites coordinated the soundtrack to the anime film Appleseed; pairing four new songs with material from artists including Paul Oakenfold, Basement Jaxx and Ryuichi Sakamoto.

10 years after their debut, with various trials and errors, Boom Boom Satellites still keep driving through the music scene. With fewer people listening to whole albums these days, Boom Boom Satellites focused on creating a record that would be set up best for people to enjoy. As a result, the Exposed clocks in at a relatively short 42 minutes and features songs that tend to flow nicely into each other. The music is also harder and more aggressive than previous releases; filled with crunching metallic guitars, bouncy basslines, electronic efx and catchy lyrics.  Exposed album track “Easy Action” was featured in Fumihiko Sori’s 3D live action anime film series, Vexille, and was included in the soundtrack featuring Asian Dub Foundation, Underworld, and The Prodigy. “Shut Up And Explode” was chosen as the opening theme to Sony Playstation 3 exclusive digital animation Xam’d: Lost Memories. This marks the first title released for Sony Playstation’s world wide video delivery service and is now available in the U.S.

Exposed is digitally released in North America on October 14.

Made Event presents ARMIN VAN BUUREN HALLOWEEN BALL @ Roseland Ballroom – 10.31

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Made Event presents an extra spooky and special Halloween Ball with Armin Van Buuren at Roseland Ballroom on Friday, October 31st, 2008. Be sure to come adorned in your best Halloween costume as this is surely going to be an All Hallowed Eve for the ages!

Armin Van Buuren simply put, is one of the greatest trance music producers and DJs of all time; DJ Mag, along with the rest of the world agree, as he was voted number one DJ for 2007 in the magazines annual Top 100 vote.  Being the official World’s Best DJ is just one of his many achievements, but the fundamental force behind his success is an overriding passion for dance music.  Even a short list of his recent accomplishments would for many comprise a lifetime body of work: ‘Best Album’ for artist album “Shivers” at both the Dutch Release Dance Awards and the prestigious Edison Awards; ‘Best Compilation’ for “A State Of Trance”, and ‘Best Mix Radio Dutch Show’ at the Miami Winter Music Conference 2006 for radio show ‘A State Of Trance’ – now broadcasting on a massive 40 FM stations worldwide as well as satellite and internet radio, with over 6 million listeners a week; and a 5th year residency in Ibiza at Amnesia, just to name a very few.

Armada and MySpace have teamed up to take care of your listening pleasure. Members of MySpace are now offered a special and exclusive preview of ‘A State of Trance 2008’ which can be heard on Armin van Buuren’s MySpace profile at www.myspace.com/arminvanbuuren.

On the October 7th, the fifth edition of Armin van Buuren’s stunning and International Dance Music Awards Winning compilation ‘A State of Trance’ will be released on Ultra Records. ‘Armin van Buuren – A State of Trance 2008’ is the long expected new album of the award winning sequence and is filled with a range of the most exclusive and hottest tracks around.  The four previous editions of the ‘A State of Trance’ series were a big success and therefore he chose to continue the concept of ASOT 2006 and 2007; CD1 contains the ‘On the Beach’ theme and consists of tracks with catchy beats, warm vocals and delicate summer melodies, while CD2 reflects the atmosphere of an Armin performance ‘In The Club’.

Armin van Buuren “Imagine” is out now on Ultra Records.

Pacha NYC presents THIS IS SANDER KLEINENBERG with John Creamer – October 3rd

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Pacha NYC presents one of its favorite sons SANDER KLEINENBERG on Friday, October 3rd, 2008. After a very successful summer season as resident of the Pure Pacha nights in Ibiza, Sander closes out the season and returns to Pacha NYC armed with an arsenal of hot new tracks and custom DVDs.

Pure Pacha Ibiza has recorded one of its busiest seasons to date with Sander stepping up gloriously to the task of becoming the clubs main resident for 2008. Basement Jaxx, Faithless, Paul Oakenfold and The Swedish House Mafia have all made appearances so far at one of the island’s wildest parties. Be sure to catch one of Sander’s final date at the Pure Pacha Ibiza closing party on 26th September alongside Axwell and Trevor Nelson.

Pacha NYC is proud to welcome back dance music’s original Dutch king, Sander Kleinenberg. As one of Global Underground’s original “Nu Breed” crew, Sander’s become only more exciting since launching his own “This Is” party brand, and branching out his sound from the progressive trance of “My Lexicon” to the electro-filth of “The Fruit” to Winter Music Conference anthem “This Is Miami.” After being locked down in the studio working on brand new material for most of the summer, Sander is sure to destroy the dancefloor. After all, This is New York!  Unmissable.
