Carl Craig Named Creative Director For MOVEMENT 2010

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

carlcraig-ondeckTechno Music legend Carl Craig has been named Creative Director for Movement 2010. Paxahau made the announcement today as they prepare for the start of Movement 2009 which began on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at noon.

“Movement is already a great festival and a successful brand,” said Craig, “it is an honor to be involved with Movement in this new capacity. I look forward to working with the team from Paxahau to take the artistic vision for the festival to a new level.”

In his new role Craig will be involved in various creative aspects of Movement including artist bookings and the festival’s brand image. He will also serve as an ambassador for the Movement festival as he travels the globe performing for throngs of electronic music enthusiasts.

“Detroit is such a wonderful music town,” Craig continued. “With Movement we have such a great opportunity to remind people from around the world and those that are right here in our own backyard that electronic music in Detroit is very powerful and that our annual festival is the best stage for showcasing the most talented artists of this musical genre.”

The annual Memorial Day Weekend festival has gone through several reincarnations since its beginning in 2000. Paxahau earned the right in 2006 to produce the festival. Since then they have been credited with bringing financial stability to the once fledgling festival and developing a festival atmosphere that appeals to fans because of the high standard of production quality they demand and their ability to book major local and international artists year after year.

Paxahau representatives were elated when Craig agreed to become creative director and believe his involvement will strengthen the future of the Movement festival in Detroit.

“We were extremely excited when Carl agreed to come on board as our new creative director,” said Jason Huvaere, president of Paxahau. “He has a complete understanding of the history of Techno Music in Detroit. He understands its impact around the world because he lives it every day.”

“Carl is a musical visionary whose ambassadorship is unparalleled. He will be able to capture the desires electronic music fans have for Movement and help us to incorporate them into future festivals.”

Quotes:

“SeeMe was excellent both in it’s organization and in the reaction from the people of Sofia and elsewhere that came together. I loved being on the panel and it’s always good to play alongside a talent the size and stature of Jeff Mills. I had an absolute blast in Sofia and I’m looking forward to being back next year with a little luck!”Paul Woolford, UK

“SeeMe was an excellent ‘boutique’ conference which gave us the opportunity to spend much more time with everyone there which I think will serve to strengthen relationships for the future.” - Ed Real, Trackitdown, UK

“The SeeMe team were incredibly hospitable and I found it exciting and rewarding to be hearing new music and meeting new people in a region of the world that shouldn’t be overlooked”Nick Halkes, Incentive Music, UK

“We were delighted to have had the opportunity to take part in this new up and coming festival, Eastern Europe has some fantastic clubs and it was great that we had the chance to showcase MoS to some of the best promoters and club owners it has. You’ll be seeing much more MoS in Eastern Europe!” -
Jenni Cochrane, Head of Tours & Events, Ministry Of Sound, UK

“I think SEEME has once again shown growth on both the business side of things as the events. The warm welcome and enthusiasm of the people add so much spirit to the conference. It shows that the whole eastern European market is on the rise and not to be underestimated. Dance4Life is proud to be partnering with SEEME and will continue to do so in the future.” Wessel van Eeden, Dance4Life, NL

“SEEME was a very good opportunity to attract the attention of industry people from countries with long dance music tradition like the UK and the US. It was good for us to make a statement – something is happening over here and it is fresh and alive. It is worth coming to South East Europe and especially Bulgaria for business and party as well.” - DJ Steven, Metropolis, BG

“I had 3 days of good socializing and got a better understanding of the music industry in the region” - Stefan Popescu, Redbull, RO

“I found SeeMe very useful, and it was even surprising and positive how many Western European and American collagues were attending, great that there is an event turning the attention to this region, where there is a really exciting electronic scene. I will definitely come next year. See you at SeeMe” - Adam Berczes, CLS Records, HU

“I found SeeMe to be unique in SE Europe as far as organization, hospitality and the general ongoings are concerned. Organizing events, etc. in this part of the world is definitely no easy task and the SeeMe guys pass with flying colors. Also, the main thing is that there was actual business to be done rather than just partying.”Christian Cambas, Devilock Records, GR

“SEEME presents an opportunity for all music professionals from East Europe to get in touch with some of the most recognizable figures in the business from all over the world and get the feedback needed to continue their work in the highest level of professionalism possible, establish new contacts through which we can promote our music industry and create opportunities that would otherwise be impossible. SEEME creates a fresh insight into how much we have accomplished and how much more we can create and learn through joined energy, but not only through work, but through fun, exchange of ideas and excellent music.”Uros Jelic, B92 Radio, RS

“SEEME was great this year and I’m very happy being part of it. I think the venue was cool and the introduction of the awards was perfect. I also liked the panels and the speakers were perfect for the themes.” - DJ Icko, Antenna 5, MK

“SeeMe is an up and coming, growing each year, evolving conference, that continues to educate and open the minds of a people gifted and driven to be creators of music. Balancing them with creativity and knowledge, as well as bridging the gap in styles and inspiring the best in all of us!”Barbara Tucker, Bstar music group, USA

Basement Jaxx, famous for their flamboyant live stage shows, will perform fully live to kick-start their summer tour. It will act as a first opportunity for anybody to see the new show. The band states:

“We’re delighted to have been asked to close the Grand Finale of the International Music Summit 2009 inside the castle at the top of the old town of Ibiza. To play such a spectacular and intimate venue on the island where we’ve had so many good times was a temptation we couldn’t turn down. What a brilliant way to kick off summer 2009!”Felix & Simon, Basement Jaxx

Basement Jaxx will also appear at the IMS summit itself, being interviewed by Pete Tong in front of the electronic industry; about how they’ve made the step from parties in Brixton to Brazilian festivals to become one of the most successful dance acts to emerge from the scene in the last 20 years.

The best way to hear The Filthy Dukes is to see their live show, which they modestly claim are “damn good so you should really come and experience it for yourself.” — Can’t say much more than that… BBC Radio 1’s Rob da Bank, founder / promoter of Bestival and Camp Bestival fame, will join IMS partner Pete Tong, to provide the DJ soundtrack for the evening.

Pete Tong states:  “This is my only performance of the Ibiza opening weekend and after three days of intense debate; it will be a night to celebrate. To see the Jaxx in the most historic location on the island will be a moment to remember. Sunset in Dalt Vila will never be the same.”

The IMS summit content is shaping up nicely too; with additional speakers being added to the already impressive line-up. With no doubling up of panels to create focus, they are gaining a well-deserved reputation for helping to shape the future of the electronic music scene.

The latest speaker additions include Mark Selby, the Vice President of Nokia Multimedia worldwide, who has history with Ibiza after creating the first ever mobile phone initiative in Ibiza in 1999 with IMS partners Ben Turner and Pete Tong. In addition, Ted Cohen from TAG Strategic will feature in a presidential style debate. Cohen was formerly Vice President of Digital Development at EMI. Martin Morales from Disney Music Group joins the synch session, whilst the legendary audio genius behind Funktion 1, Tony Andrews, will also speak about the increasing importance of educating about good sound to the iPod generation. Other names of note include artist Mark Knight, plus representatives from The Big Chill, AEG Europe, Ingenious Media and BBC Radio 1.

THE END PRESENTS ‘SHAKE IT’ STAGE

New to South West Four this year is The End presents ‘Shake It’ stage. The End was a symbol of London’s clubland, at the very fore-front of every major movement and purveyor of all things electronic and groovy. Sadly the world said goodbye to The End in January 2009 when the club shut, but the spirit and passion lives on with its owner Layo Paskin, who launched his new warehouse concept ‘Shake It’ in March. Layo & Bushwacka! are the first names to be announced in The End presents ‘Shake It’ stage with some seriously huge headline guests and support DJs to be announced very soon. “I was blown away by SW4” says Layo, referring to his debut set at last summer’s South West Four festival. “We had an early afternoon set and I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was packed and had a great crowd and atmosphere. It was a highlight of my summer”. Read the full interview with Layo below.

THE GALLERY STAGE

Quite simply London’s leading weekly club, The Gallery returns to South West Four this summer to host its very own stage for the 4th year running. Establishing its reputation for ‘Excellence in the Art of Sound’ each and every Friday night at the legendary Turnmills for 13 years, The Gallery’s move to Ministry of Sound in April 2008 was greeted with open arms by DJs and clubbers alike. The famous south London club was the natural new home for The Gallery and week in, week out, they continue to amaze with some of the biggest line-ups on the planet! The Gallery’s SW4 line-up will be announced at The Gallery’s 14th Birthday on Friday 24th April at Ministry of Sound where Armin van Buuren is amongst the headliners. You know from previous years that The Gallery has ALWAYS delivered the goods in this department, and we can confirm there are some MASSIVE names on the bill for this year!

GLOBAL UNDERGROUND STAGE

Debuting at South West Four in 2009 will be world renowned dance label Global Underground. The GU imprint is arguably dance music’s most established and iconic record label and has been synonymous with the world’s leading electronic artists since 1996! As such, Global Underground’s SW4 stage will feature an array of globe-trotting headliners alongside newer breakthrough talent from their current roster. “GU is happy to be bringing its sound to SW4” says the label’s main man Andy Horsfield. “It’s been a while since I found a festival good enough for us to want to be involved. Global Underground is proud to be hosting a stage this year at South West Four.”

Look out for a special appearance from GU master Danny Howells, who’s completed a hat-trick of releases on the label… ‘GU 27: Miami’, ‘GU Nu Breed’ and ‘GU 247’. Danny is also a seasoned veteran of South West Four, as is Nic Fanciulli who’ll be racking up his 4th appearance at SW4 this summer. Nic’s debut GU compilation is released at the end of April. Next up is Nick Warren, a GU man through and through. Nick has released more compilations than any other artist, as ‘Lima 35: Nick Warren’ became his 8th release in total! SW4 debutant James Lavelle is bringing up the rear with his 3rd mix set to drop later this year, plus there’s another debut on the day from the latest Nu Breed mixmaster Jim Rivers. Meanwhile, future superstar Anil Chawla makes his second SW4 appearance on the spin, following the highly acclaimed release of his debut album ‘Roadhouse’ (with partner Dale Anderson) on GU in February. And yet there’s more… look out for one final very special guest to be announced real soon. Mmmm?

EXCLUSIVE LAYO PASKIN INTERVIEW!

Firstly, I think we speak on behalf of everyone in clubland in congratulating you on everything you achieved at The End and given to London. How hard a decision was it to call it a day?

Thank you. It was hard because we were all so emotionally involved and it had been our lives for a long time, but deep down we knew that the timing was good and the opportunity to have a full story and walk away on our terms was a special one. We didn’t feel there was more we could do but continue and we didn’t want to lose the passion that made it the place we all loved.

How has the closing of The End changed your life on a day to day basis now that the dust has settled? What do you miss the most?

Yes but I haven’t had as much time off as I thought I would! But that is down to me, I’ve been in the studio a lot, we organized shake it but I am beginning to enjoy the freedom. I miss working with the team there; we had a real family vibe.

Did you take any cool memorabilia from the club?!

Yes lots. But the best bit is a piece of the original flooring with the dates of the club’s history inscribed; it looks good in my home studio.

New for 2009 is ‘Shake It’, your new warehouse concept. How did the launch party go with Laurent Garnier?

Fantastic, but it was a lot of work with just a few of us and not the whole end team…

Was it weird hosting a party away from The End?

Yes definitely, for the first hour all I could think was this wasn’t The End but then I relaxed and the party took on its own identity and it was fantastic, reminded me of when I started in all the good ways.

You made your debut at the South West Four festival last summer on the Main Stage, how was that for you?

Awesome. I was blown away by SW4. We had an early afternoon set and I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was packed and had a great crowd and atmosphere. It was a highlight of my summer.

This year we’re privileged to have you guys hosting one of the arenas. Tell us more…

Well Danny [from SW4] approached us and it was great to be asked because London is our home. SW4 is already an amazing event and we are doing new parties in the form of “Shake It” so the combination felt perfect. We’re really looking forward to it.

What’s the best thing about outdoor festivals in the summer and do you have any essential festival survival tips?

Well of course it is weather dependent, but somehow that weekend always is pretty good, partying outside is the ultimate and of course we aren’t spoilt in England with sun so I think we all really embrace each opportunity. Festival tips? Enjoy the moment.

What’s your favourite festival drink?

Nothing too unique, it’s not easy getting the perfect drink in a field but a cold beer always washes well.

What’s been your most shameful festival moment – be it on a social level or whilst performing… come on be honest…?!

Honestly nothing I can remember, I have slept in the back of my car a few times which always seems like not too bad an idea till you wake up…

Now the weekends are totally yours again, will you be making up for some lost time with tours galore on the horizon?

Yes but I have been on the road pretty much relentlessly for ten years, still I love to travel.

What’s next for Layo & Bushwacka in 2009? Production, DJ wise etc

Studio, lots of it… remixes for artists from Fatboy Slim to labels such as Plus 8, pretty varied and lots of tracks for our label, Olmeto. And of course DJing somewhere near you this year.
