Youthful Corps - Hinthial EP
(Phatt Sounds)
Release Date: December 31st, 2007
Reviewed: 2.5/5
You'll have to bear with me on this on one as there are six tracks to review for the release. While on that note, does a release really require 5 remixes?
Now, onto the first track...
The original tune sounds good quality wise. Nice deep kick, good work on the panning and the sounds are really good. Creates a good mood. But alas it is a bad song. There is no groove per se, it just keeps on trucking forward. It's a good utility tune for the opening hours but you won't hear it anytime after that. Quality production, the talent is there just have to work on the song writing.
The Chris Asper remix, the second tune on this release, starts off good. Strong drum programing that creates a solid groove with a nice use of samples from the original. Starts out promising but it seems to lose steam. It's a good filler tune to build a lot of anticipation and tension but a forgettable tune none the less.
The Mibor Remix is the third tune off of this release, and goes off in a completely different direction than the previous two. It's a stripped down number but it has a solid groove and creates a haunting atmosphere. The bassline, while not being groundbreaking does a good job and works well with the simple melody. Good song writing but the production is a bit lacking.
Half way there!
The S Szymkiewicz Reminimalized remix is by far the poorest release on here I'd say. It's way to repetitive, and that's saying a lot for a dance track. There is no variation start to finish. Monotone would sum this track up well. Even if you like minimal I would still pass this one over.
The Miqa Lizer is a breath of fresh air compared to those before it. The percussion work is done well and creates a solid groove, the bass is very organic and comes to life. It just keeps on driving start to finish and keeps you moving. The main melody is rather simple and not in a good way, that's the only thing holding this tune back from being played peak time. By far the best track on this release.
And finally we have the Maya Ismo Remix. I actually like this one a lot, the bass line is rather simple but effective. It works well with all the other elements and just carries the song while not trying to do more than it's role. This song is raw, almost industrial but it makes you move to it. All the sounds and samples work well and play off of each other to make a noisy, raw tune that will sit well with a number of DJs for those 4am sets.
Overall, a rather sub par release at best. You could have easily lost half the tracks on release and no one would be missing them. The production as a whole is very well done, but the song writing needs improvements.
