Mario Zar & Marco Berto - Skyline EP (Presslab Records Group)
Release Date: March 28th, 2008
Reviewed: 5/5
User Rating: 4.7/5

It seems like a lot of minimal or tech house that comes across my desk here is just kind of repetitive dj tool type tracks, which are useful in their own way but the Skyline EP has three really great songs, skillfully written with excellent structure, progression, and uniqueness of sound.

Dirty winti is a poppin’ bubbly minimal tune with good progression, peaking full of all sorts of weirdness.

Funky Your Ass Off features what sounds like old school hip hop or house samples interspersed seemingly at random over a tightly grooving rhythm, the peak phrase of this one perhaps a little too frantic with something (a reversed hi-hat?) just not sitting right in the fray. Otherwise pretty dope.

Skyline begins with almost a laid back flavor, the energy just below the surface. Moving on with spoken word lightly layered in over quirky percussion. The title track has got some really mad things going on with the plucky synths warping and delays bouncing around. Great production.

The evolution of the sounds taking place throughout the course of the song is what makes these tunes so appealing; Synths and other effects are constantly warping and stuttering, keeping everything fresh and interesting. Expect more good things to come from Mario Zar & Marco Berto.
