Anthony Pappa - Moments (High Note Records)

Last month saw Taiwanese imprint High Note Records release "Moments." The new 2 x CD + 1 (downloadable bonus) mix from Aussie jock Anthony Pappa stands as a great example of where progressive house and techno are headed at the moment.

"Moments" draws on tech house, minimal, and techno to set the stage before dropping the progressive house like a bomb with Pappa’s own Outback, midway into the mix.

Smooth progressive mixing is what to expect as Pappa blurs the lines between house and techno sub-styles, yielding a definite sense of cohesive unity within the track selection.

Darko Esser’s Blackout, with rework by the late Human Adams, is a standout track with its unique sound and unconventional shifts in syncopation. The theme of shifting syncopation continues with Animaltek’s Karmik Loops and throughout the first disc you’ll find these intriguing little moments that occur when the elements of the song sort of meander in and out of phase with each other like some broken techno machine, only to be swept up and snapped back into place. This along with all the pitch bending, key shifting, and general envelope pushing, really defines what is going on in techno right now.

Hamburg’s DJ Koze gives us Mariposa, another great track in here worth mentioning, as is the spacey freakout provided by Dubfire’s Roadkill (Maurizio & Danyelino Remix).

Disc 2 drops a couple more progressive house tunes ala Stel’s Sparky’s Heartstopper and Terry Lee Brown Jr’s Day Shift, with their pumping synth leads and dubby echo goodness before heading back into techno territory with the likes of Vincent Vega’s bassbin shakin’ Rectum (Chris Fortier Remix).

With this latest creation, Anthony Pappa effectively takes you on a smooth ride through new, distinctive, thoughtful, techno and progressive soundscapes. “Moments” definitely skirts the line between progressive house and techno in some spots and it makes for a damn good mix no matter what you call it.
