Steve Lawler - Viva Toronto (Renaissance)
Release Date: June 30th, 2008
Reviewed: 4.5/5

“Viva Toronto,” the second mix in Steve Lawler’s Viva residency series recorded at B.C.’s Guvurnment club, is an exceptional two-disc set cleverly mixed in a respectable techno fashion. Building up from a dead silence, Lawler brings it along at decent pace, kicking things up a notch with tunes like Spektre’s tech bangin’ Capacitor. All the while, the bass getting deeper as we go, with bottom heavy cuts like Tmsstr’s As You Like It and Christian Smith & John Selway’s driving techno riser Total Departure. Thankfully, there is a little progressive type stuff near the end of the “Inside” set, which finishes off strong with ’Ilario Alicante’s hammy, yet totally loveable, I Like To Serve (that ping pong track).

The “Outside” disc drops with a downtempo chill, punctuated by the fantastically charming Drifting On by Miss Fitz before moving along with a rather subdued style of tech house and even more huge bass on tracks like Nivek Tsoy’s Time & Space. The tempo eases slightly back up again with noteworthy tunes like Stu Hirst’s Cambio and Audion’s Billy Says Go, but the set keeps a mostly chill vibe throughout.

This is a pretty solid mix set, full of good tunes and it sounds like it was one hell of a show, plus it's great to hear real live dj mixing, not all that laptop rubbish. A tip of the hat to Steve Lawler, nicely done sir.
