Hybrid - Soundsystem 01 (Hope Recordings)

This summer, world-renowned Welsh duo Hybrid, Mike Truman and Chris Healings, drop us their impressive new double disc mix compilation, “Soundsystem 01,” courtesy of Bristol based Hope Recordings.

Part one is quite a fantastic mixture of cinematic chillout, ambient, and downtempo cuts. Unsurprisingly, much of the material was originally used in film soundtracks. Their selection and mixture of electronic orchestral soundscapes is truly amazing. The beatless ambiance is a nice change, and when a beat does drop back in, it’s just that much sweeter.

Disc 2 turns out to be an excellent progressive and tech-house mix that’s strong from the start and solid throughout, Luke Dzierzek’s Identity (King Unique Mix) gets things going, while Soliquid’s great subdued melodic prog, Lonesfield stirs the pot, and things really heat up around progressive heavies like Lank’s Confrontation and Oliver Moldan Vs. Harada’s Fortune Cookie The occasional breakbeat drops in, but the majority here are 4/4 rhythms, unlike much of their previous work, as this is meant to provide a glimpse into their DJs sets at the moment.

With such a grasp for the cinematic, I'm sure these two will enjoy even more success with future film projects as well.
